PrideFest Main Stage performer Nina Montaldo's 10th Anniversary Coronation Video

Meet Nina Montaldo
The beautiful and talented Nina Montaldo has been doing drag since 1969. A former ICRME Empress (she just celebrated the 10th anniversary of her reign), Nina wows crowds year after year at PrideFest. Don't miss her performance this year at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 22 on the Main Stage right before the legendary Miss Martha Wash!
Drew: Nina, how long have you been performing at PrideFest?
Nina: For many years. I first started in the 1980s.
What is your favorite thing about PrideFest?
When you see all those people out there. You just get high on the energy. I don't do drugs but you know what I mean? When you see all those people it just really makes you feel high.
Do you have a most memorable PrideFest moment?
They're all good moments.
What can you tell us about your performance this year?
This year I'm doing Shirley Bassey because she has a new album out. I'll be doing a Shirley Bassey medley. She's my favorite. I've been doing her since the '70s.
How has doing drag changed over the years?
It goes up and down. Some years it's good, like when La Cage aux Folles came out, and other years it's not so good. I don't know if it's up or down now.
How has PrideFest changed over the years?
Oh, it just gets bigger and bigger every year. That's a good thing.
Where else can we see you perform?
Once a month I'm in the show 'Dreamgirls' at Hamburger Mary's and I perform every Sunday at Charlie's with Michael Vrooman.
What message do you have for readers of the PrideFest blog?
Time goes by and you just have to keep going. Never look back. Always look ahead. And I look forward to seeing all my fans this year at PrideFest.

Romaine is confirmed for PrideFest
Romaine Patterson has been confirmed for PrideFest as the emcee for Family Field Day. Romaine is the co-host of Sirius Satellite Radio's "Derek and Romaine" show who first got started in GLBT activism when her close friend Matthew Shepard was killed in Wyoming in 1998. She is perhaps best known for her work combating the anti-gay Rev. Fred Phelps (whose Westboro Baptist Church picketed Shepard's funeral) as the founder of Angel Action, an organization for peaceful demonstration.

Blast from the Past: Sophie B. Hawkins interview
Sophie B. Hawkins has not been confirmed for PrideFest at this time but she is one of the top contenders for a slot. Here's a little blast from the past interview I did with her back in 2004 that originally appeared in Out Front Colorado:
Sophie B. Hawkins: Wilderness

Sophie B. Hawkins burst onto the entertainment scene in 1992 with her smash breakout hit, "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover", a song that caused more than a blip in the gaydar of America’s GLBT pop-music fans with the lyric, “I sat on the mountainside with peace of mind, I lay by the ocean making love to her with visions clear." It was as frank a depiction of homoeroticism as ever heard before on the radio. She followed up that success with an even greater one in "As I Lay Me Down", a song that charted on Billboard for a record-breaking 67 weeks.
Now the self-proclaimed omnisexual is back with a new record, 'Wilderness', and a brilliant new single, "Beautiful Girl", that is making a big splash and that many critics are calling her best work ever.
Drew: How is this record different from your previous efforts?
Sophie B.: “I love every record I’ve done but this is the first one where I feel a kind of freedom with. First of all, it’s my own label so in a way it feels like the success of this record would be light in the process of art and creativity. It would feel good. If it was a failure I would accept it and keep working but I would be disappointed!”
Is commercial success important to you?
“Commercial success is fabulous but it’s not everything. With Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, I never thought anyone would ever even listen to that song, much less play it on the radio and have it become successful but it’s great to play shows and have everybody know it. Of course it would be great to have success like that again, it would be amazing! If I was selling out I would be ashamed of it but I’m not selling out, I’m connecting with people and that’s awesome.”
You seem to do especially well at connecting with the GLBT community. They love you.
“That’s great to hear because I’ve heard other things. I mean, the gay community is my community, but I’ve heard that people have a problem with me saying that I’m omnisexual. That’s hard for me to hear because everything about me is so pro-gay.”
You’re probably sick to death of this question, but what exactly does it mean to be omnisexual?
“No, it’s a good question and I can never answer it enough because I feel like I’m always growing and changing. I say I’m omnisexual because I fall in love with a soul and not a sex because I’ve had equally intense relationships with men and with women. I’m not choosing between a penis and a pussy. People are more than that. Also, omnixesual fits because there are more than two genders.”

First of all, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying the blog as much as I'm enjoying blogging! Second, I know that Sophie B. is one of the names that have been bandied about as a possible headliner for PrideFest but as of this moment, I do not know that she has been confirmed. I sure hope she does end up on the bill because she's an amazing artist and a really cool person (I interviewed her two or three times over the years back when I was with Out Front Colorado).

It's raining Martha! Martha Wash confirmed for PrideFest 2008
I just found out that Martha "It's Raining Men" Wash has been confirmed to appear at PrideFest. Wow. If there is a better choice or a more iconic performer for PrideFest, I don't know who it could possibly be. Stay tuned for more information. Lots more!

That's Entertainment: PrideFest Headliners
One of the best parts of any PrideFest is the entertainment. You never know who PrideFest is going to bring in to bring down the house. I can't confirm anything quite yet but this year's batch of potential headliners sounds like they could be the hottest lineup yet.
